World's First Intelligent Production Line for Marine Low-Speed Engine Piston Heads Officially Put into Operation

Suzhou SET Industrial Equipment Empowers with Core Technology, Leading Intelligent Upgrading of Marine Power Manufacturing

The world's first intelligent production line for marine low-speed engine piston heads was officially put into operation in Anqing. Led by CSSC Power Group, the production line saw deep participation in technical research and joint supply of core equipment by Suzhou SET Industrial Equipment System Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With more than 10 key technological breakthroughs including zero point clamping system, heavy-load automation, and off-machine clamping & alignment, the line has achieved triple leaps in production efficiency, labor cost reduction, and machining accuracy, marking that China's manufacturing of key marine power components has entered a new stage of micron-level precision and full-process intelligent control.

Marine low-speed engines are the "heart" of large ships, and piston heads operate under extreme conditions of high temperature, high pressure, and strong corrosion for a long time, requiring machining accuracy up to 0.005mm level. The traditional production mode relies on manual clamping and empirical debugging, with pain points such as low efficiency, poor consistency, and accuracy fluctuations. To break the industry bottleneck, the project team, together with Suzhou SET and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, carried out joint research, deeply integrating high-precision positioning, intelligent clamping, automated logistics, and digital twins to build the world's first intelligent production line adapted to heavy-duty precision piston heads.
As the core technical support unit of the project, Suzhou SET provided a full set of high-precision zero point positioning system and intelligent clamping solutions:
  • Equipped with zero point fixture and zero point workholding system, with repeat positioning accuracy ≤0.005mm, realizing rapid workpiece changeover and unified reference, improving changeover efficiency by more than 80%;
  • Innovative off-machine clamping and alignment process, separating clamping calibration from machining processes, greatly increasing equipment utilization rate;
  • Cooperating with heavy-load robots for loading and unloading, realizing stable, accurate and continuous transfer of heavy workpieces, supporting 24-hour unmanned operation of the production line.

SET's zero point system and automatic detection & compensation technology work in deep synergy, locking the machining reference in real time and dynamically compensating errors, ensuring that the dimensional deviation of each product is stably controlled within the micron level, with a product qualification rate of 99.8%, meeting the highest standards of major global classification societies.
After the production line was put into use, it delivered impressive results: production efficiency increased by 60%, labor reduced by 70%, and accuracy stabilized at 0.005mm level, completely getting rid of dependence on highly skilled workers and effectively solving the "bottleneck" problem of high-end marine components. At the same time, the production line has achieved a leap from "stand-alone discrete processing" to "intelligent continuous manufacturing", providing a replicable template for the intelligent upgrading of key components such as marine engine cylinder blocks and crankshafts.
